Or au Burundi, l’actuel Président, Pierre Nkurunziza, a choisi la manière forte pour se maintenir coûte que coûte au pouvoir. Depuis qu’il a annoncé fin avril sa candidature pour un troisième mandat, le Burundi s’embrase. Violences policières, radios privées fermées ou brûlées et médias muselés, arrestations arbitraires, assassinats politiques, menaces de mort sur les journalistes et des membres de la diaspora. La milice présidentielle « imbonerakure » sème la terreur. Des policiers impliqués dans ces exactions se trouvent « récompensés » par des nominations à des postes de diplomates. La place de l’Indépendance est le théâtre de toutes les résistances, notamment des femmes burundaises.

Pierre Nkurunziza prétend organiser au forceps des élections présidentielles pour imposer à son peuple et à la communauté internationale un troisième mandat, en violation flagrante de la Constitution burundaise qui limite à deux mandats l’exercice du pouvoir présidentiel, et de l’Accord d’Arusha pour la Paix et la Réconciliation, signé en 2000 après la guerre civile.

Des élections équitables et impartiales ne peuvent se tenir dans le contexte actuel de violences ni aujourd’hui ni les 29 juin, 15 et 23 juillet comme le propose la CENI (Commission Electorale Indépendante) qui n’a d’indépendante que le nom. D’ailleurs, l’Union européenne et la Conférence des évêques catholiques du Burundi se sont retirées du processus électoral.

Les Burundais, attachés à la liberté, répondent NON à ce 3ème mandat et refusent de se faire violer ! Les Burundais refusent d’être victimes d’un tyran qui n’hésite pas à assassiner sa jeunesse et à prendre le risque d’embraser toute la région de l’Afrique des Grands Lacs pour se maintenir au pouvoir.

Nous, citoyens du monde et du Burundi,

• Apportons notre soutien aux Burundais qui se battent pour leur liberté et leur droit légitime au respect de la Constitution : nous saluons leur courage et leur audace qui forcent le respect.
• Nous adressons solennellement à Michaëlle Jean, secrétaire générale de l’Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, Ban ki-moon, secrétaire général des Nations Unies, à Ali Bongo Ondimba, président de la CEEAC (Communauté Economique des Etats d’Afrique Centrale), à Yowevri Musevini, Uhuru Kenyatta, Paul Kagame et Jakaya Mrisho Kiwete, membres de la Communauté d’Afrique de l’Est (EAC), à Robert Mugabe, président de l’Union africaine, à Barack Obama, président des Etats-Unis, à François Hollande, président de la République française, et à Donald Tusk, président du Conseil européen de l’Union Européenne : nous vous demandons de suspendre toute coopération technique avec les autorités burundaises, de stopper toute organisation des élections rendues impossibles par le chaos qui y règne, de bloquer les (nombreux) avoirs financiers et visas Schengen de Pierre Nkurunziza, de sa famille et de ses partisans les plus proches, enfin d’instaurer en concertation avec les forces politiques burundaises une courte transition politique chargée d’organiser, dès le départ de Pierre Nkurunziza et la paix civile revenue, des élections démocratiques d’où sortira un nouveau président.
• Nous demandons une enquête internationale pour que justice soit rendue aux victimes de ces violences.
• Enfin, nous exigeons de Pierre Nkurunziza qu’il se retire immédiatement du pouvoir et qu’il renonce à participer à toute élection future. Seul son retrait définitif de la vie politique mettra à terme à toute violence et permettra une transition pacifique qui conduira à une alternance démocratique au Burundi et demain dans toute l’Afrique.

Le Burundi aspire à la liberté et prie l’opinion internationale de l’aider à réaliser son dessein légitime.

Despite this yearning for democracy, President Pierre Nkurunziza, has chosen the hard and illegal way to maintain his power. His announcement at the end of April to seek a third presidential term has set Burundi ablaze, with countless incidents of police violence, silencing of the media, closing and burning of private radio stations, arbitrary arrests, political murders and death threats on journalists and members of the diaspora… His presidential militia, “Imbonerakure”, is sowing terror throughout the country. The police is implicated in the exactions and is recompensed by nominations at diplomatic positions. The Square of Independence is the main scene of the women’s resistance.

Pierre Nkurunziza wants to force the organization of presidential elections in order to impose a third term on his people and on the international community, in flagrant violation of the country’s Constitution, which limits Presidential mandates to two terms, and of The Arusha Accord for Peace and Reconciliation, signed in 2000 after the civil war.

Fair and free elections can not be held in the current context of violence, nor on June 29th and July 15th and 23rd, as proposed by the Independent Electoral Commission (CENI), independent only by its name. The European Union and the Conference of catholic Bishops of Burundi have decided to step away from the electoral process.

The people of Burundi are firmly attached to their freedom and say NO to this third term. They refuse to be violated! They refuse to be victims of a tyrant who doesn’t hesitate to assassinate his country’s youth to risk setting ablaze the entire Great Lakes region in order to stay in power.

We, citizens of the world and citizens of Burundi :

• Give our support to the Burundian people who are fighting for their freedom and for their legitimate demand for the respect of their Constitution: we applaud their courage and their dignity in the face of violent and illegal repression.
• We solemnly address Michaëlle Jean, the Secretary General of the International Organization of La Francophonie, Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, Ali Bongo Ondimba, President of the Economic Community of Central African States, Yoweri Musevini, Uhuru Kenyatta, Paul Kagame and Jakaya Mrisho Kiwete, members of the East-African Community (EAC), Robert Mugabe, President of the African Union, Barack Obama, President of the United States, François Hollande, President of the French Republic, and Donald Tusk, President of the European Council of the European Union: we ask them to suspend all technical cooperation with the Burundian authorities, to stop the organization of elections, which should not go forward under the prevailing chaos, to block the (multiple) financial assets and Shengen visas for Pierre Nkurunziza, his family and his close supporters, and, finally, to set up, together with the political forces of Burundi, a short term political transition that will organize, as soon as Pierre Nkurunziza leaves his functions and civil peace is restored, democratic elections
• We demand an international investigation into current events, so that justice be accorded to all victims of this repression.
• Finally, we demand that Pierre Nkurunziza step down from power immediately and that he renounces in participating in any further election. Only his definitive and irreversible withdrawal from the political scene can put an end to the violence and allow for a peaceful transition towards a democratic order in Burundi, Along with the entire African continent.

Burundi yearns for freedom and asks the international opinion for support in achieving its legitimate aspirations for peace and prosperity.

Petero Nkurunziza  yifuza gukoresha amatora ku ngumvu  maze mu kwima matwi abanyagihugu n’abenegihugu  ndetse n’amahanga yose yiyamiriza ikiringo ca gatatu,kidahuye n’ibwirizwa nshingiro  nryemerera umukuru w’igihugu gutwara ibiringo bibiri gusa ndetse n’amasezerano ya Arusha yateweko igihugu mu mwaka wi 2000  inyuma  y’imyaka n’iyindi y’intambara nugucanamwo kwa bene Burundi.
